“Tatu/batok”
Tattoos have been a form of self-expression, cultural identity,
and status for centuries. In the Philippines, indigenous groups
used tattoos as symbols of bravery and honor, earning them the
name Los Pintados ("The Painted Ones") from the Spaniards.
Over time, tattoos became associated with crime and rebellion,
leading to stigma in modern society. Today, tattoos are widely
embraced as an art form and personal expression, though some
industries still view them negatively. Efforts to change perceptions
continue, promoting tattoos as meaningful and legitimate creative
expressions.
